INDIANS GAVE UP THEIR CITIZENSHIP IN 2021 TO SETTLE DOWN HERE

Citing the data issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on 19th July 2022, the multitude of Indians who renounced their citizenship increased significantly in 2021, with 1,63,370 doing so as compared to 85,256 in 2020. 1,44,017 Indians abandoned their citizenship in 2019.

The data was available by Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in response to a question from Lok Sabha member Haji Fazlur Rehman of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

According to official data, the United States (US) continues the favorable destination for Indians seeking to settle down, with the multitude of Indians, granted citizenship jumping from 30,828 in 2020 to 78,284 in 2021.

In the last year, Australia has risen to second place, with 23,533 Indians swapping their citizenship for one in Australia. In 2020, up to 13,518 Indians exchanged their citizenship for one in Australia.

Canada, which sees a large influx of Indians for school and employment every year, fell to third place in 2021, with a total of 21,597 Indians selecting the country’s citizenship and giving up their own.

4. United Kingdom (14,637 in 2021 from 6,489 in 2020)

5. Italy (5,986 in 2021 from 2,312 in 2020)

6. New Zealand (2,643 in 2021 from 2,116 in 2020)

7. Singapore (2,516 in 2021 from 2,289 in 2020)

8. Germany (2,381 in 2021 from 2,152 in 2020)

9. The Netherlands (2,187 in 2021 from 1,213 in 2020)

10. Sweden (1,841 in 2021 from 1,046 in 2020)
